Home to one of New Zealand’s leading and most innovative orchid growers and exporters.
We focus on breeding high quality cymbidium orchids for international cut flower markets in Asia, USA and Europe.
Florama was established in the late 1980’s by Arnold & Rietje Nieuwenhuijsen on a 2 hectare site at Ramarama, 30 minutes south of Auckland city.
Over the years a strong reputation grew around the quality of their blooms and cymbidium orchid breeding programme.
In 1999 Florama was purchased by Taiwan Flower Biotechnology, a company formed by key members of the Taiwanese horticulture industry; whose goal was to become a major supplier of young plants and cut flowers to world markets.
To this end an additional two glasshouses were built on the Ramarama site; whilst an 8 hectare block of land was also purchased in Waiuku. In 2004 work began on developing the Waiuku site with 1.6 hectares of glasshouses coming into production in the 2008 flower season.
The Waiuku site was designed with up to the minute technology and is supported by a 14,000,000 litre irrigation pond, automated Fertigation and a purpose built Dutch-design overhead flower transporter system. This system transports flowers directly from the place of harvest in the glasshouse to the processing section with minimal handling.
The 2010 flower season saw the introduction of bar coding in our flower processing section allowing despatch procedures to be automated, resulting in increased staff productivity and accurate identification and tracking of our products.
The team at Florama are committed to supplying top quality blooms and delivering consistent and reliable service while continuing to evolve to meet the needs of a constantly changing world flower market. At the completion of the 2011 flower season a decision was made to consolidate the Florama brand under one site; this resulted in the disposal of the Ramarama facility to another grower.
Whilst decreasing the number of stems produced annually, the team at Florama remain committed to supplying top quality blooms and delivering consistent and reliable service in an ever more discerning world flower market. |
